Le troisième jour à Agra, c’est au tour du Fort . Tout en pierre rouge comme le "Fort Rouge de Delhi, c’est une place forte du plus bel effet.

Shah Jahan ayant fortement contribué a sa construction, il y a à l'intérieur plusieurs palais et mosquées en marbre blanc, le matériau préféré de Jahan. Quand il fut renversé par son fils, l’affreux Aurangzeb qui avait auparavant fait assassiner ses trois frères aînés et leurs familles pour s’assurer le trône, Jahan fut emprisonné au fort d’Agra, non pas dans une cage dorée, mais en marbre blanc d'où il pouvait voir à chaque instant et à quelque distance de là, le Taj Mahal qu’il avait fait construire comme tombe pour sa bien aimée Mumtaz !

Le soir même, train de nuit pour Varanasi (Benares).

On the third and final day, it’s the Agra Fort. Another stunning fortress a mere two kilometers upstream from the Taj on the Yamuna, it’s filled with palaces, mosques, assembly halls… Several were built/improved upon by Shah Jahan, so there’s an abundance of white marble, Jahan’s favorite material. When Jahan was overthrown by his son, the very nasty Aurangzeb who had previously murdered his three older brothers and their families so as to get the throne, Jahan spent the last six years of his life in the fort under “house arrest”. Not to worry, he was not thrown in a dank dungeon cell, but lived out his days in one of his exquisite marble palaces, with a full and perfect view of the Taj where rested for all eternity his beloved Mumtaz!

That very night, I boarded the night train for Varanasi (Benares).
